Wardrobe Essentials
“Little Black Dress” – The basic “little” black dress has been around for a long time. Don’t take it too literal. It doesn’t have to be little and it doesn’t have to be black. The point is you need a classic dress that is the perfect cut for your body, that you can always rely on and transform with a variety of accessories.
Trench Coat - The trench coat is one of the pieces that is both a classic and currently a hot fashion item. It’s practical and figure flattering.
Classic Dress Pants – Depending on the palette of your wardrobe, choose a tan, brown or black, pleatless pant. You want your pants to create a straight line down your leg so, no tapered bottoms!
Classic White Blouse – Don’t skimp here…a good white blouse is a definite wardrobe staple. Look for good quality with nice tailoring and darts. Some mornings simply putting on a crisp, white shirt does wonders for improving my mood and, therefore, self-image.
Jeans – Almost everyone has a pair of jeans, but that doesn’t mean they’re the right jeans. Again, don’t skimp here. You really only need one flattering pair. Jeans have come a long way so, think beyond “Levis” to black, wide-leg, mid-rise, even cuffed!
Layering Knit or Shell - This is one of those items you will want to build on over time and according to your color palette and the season. If you have a more casual lifestyle you may choose to substitute this item for a quality “t-shirt” or jersey style shirt in both black and white.
Skirt – Don’t be threatened by skirts! Thanks to the recent return of femininity, they’re no longer considered “dressy.” Just remember to choose a style that flatters your figure and you’re comfortable wearing. When you look and feel good…you can pull off anything.
Day Dress – Same as above (#7) it’s all in how you wear it! If you want to stand out from the crowd, in a positive way, wear a simple, figure flattering dress.
Blazer/Jacket - A blazer or jacket may sound masculine, but if you pick the right one, with the proper shape- it’s not. A jacket should follow the silhouette of your body and accent (or create) an hourglass curve at your waist. It’s also much more figure flattering than a sweater to wear with a skirt or dress pants and a white shirt. It also looks great casual with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
Sweat Suit Alternative – Sweat suits are appropriate for the gym or home. PERIOD. Ah-ah-ah that’s it! End of discussion. Throw on a pair of jeans, a casual skirt or a pair of leggings and an over-sized top if you have to dash to the grocery store. Remember: if you opt for leggings, your top should cover your hips.
